New Bed for Potatoes!

Photo-0058

With potato being such a staple, it’s a surprise more South African gardens don’t have this delicious root vegetable! This freshly dug bed just needs some good compost worked in to enrich the soil and then it’s good to go. I have chosen a spot that retains water well (is near a rainwater pipe too) and gets a half day of sun because potatoes can wilt quite easily and like sun but cannot go dry like some herbs can. The other real trick to growing potatoes, like any root crop, is well worked rich soil. Potatoes also need protection around the base to protect the growing tubers so car tires actually really come in handy here! Simply stack them around the potatoes for support and protection. But I prefer a more aesthetic look for my vegetables so I will use other methods.
