Growing Maize Organically

organic maize crop

Maize is an absolute must in any vegetable garden. It grows tall so it makes a lovely background for herbs and you can also use the space in between for spreading groundcover vegetables like butternut and other squashes. Maize plants have lateral growing roots close to the surface so keep well watered. They like full sun – I have mine growing in the sunniest spots in the garden and they thrive there. Fertilization is important as these plants are heavy feeders. Nitrogen fixing plants such as peas are useful when planted before the maize because they will add a lot of nitrogen to the soil.
